Through the Scripps National Spelling Bee, students from every walk of life participate in one of our nation’s oldest, most beloved and iconic spectacles, a competition centered on language and learning unlike anything else in education, entertainment or sport. Each year all across America, more than 11 million students begin this amazing journey. They progress from classrooms and cafeterias to auditoriums and civic centers all the way to the national stage in Washington, D.C.
As a piece of Americana, the Bee is a microcosm of the American dream of inclusion, achievement and victory. We have evolved and thrived for more than 90 years because of the dedication of teachers and sponsors who continue to support our determination to make learning and language fun and accessible, with no social, economic or educational barriers. All that is required is the desire to learn, the ambition to win and the courage to stand up and participate.
Administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors, the Bee provides teachers and parents inspiring tools to help students achieve in spelling and learn the words they need to be the listeners, speakers, readers and writers of their dreams.
